A holiday home brief that had to work for groups
The client was a private holiday home in Hermanus, used by family groups, weekend visitors and summer guests who arrived with mixed tastes and different meal patterns. The owner wanted a practical catering support pack that could sit in the fridge or pantry, travel well from Paarl, and give guests a few easy options without needing a full cook-on-site setup.
The brief covered shared breakfasts, grazing boards, quick lunch spreads and simple evening platters. The products had to be easy to portion, sturdy enough for courier movement, and suitable for serving straight from the jar or spooning onto crackers, bread, flatbreads and roasted veg. We were asked for preserves that felt local and thoughtful, not overcomplicated.
What mattered most for the Hermanus kitchen
Hermanus coastal conditions shaped the order. Salt air, warmer weekends and a holiday-home pantry that may not be checked every day all affected what would work best. The owner needed packaging that would keep its shape in transit, lids that stayed secure, and jars that could be stored with limited fridge space between guest stays. A small typo on the old shopping list became a useful lesson too: the household needed more variety than a single sweet preserve, and more portion control than one large tub could give.
We planned the order around practical serving use and courier handling. The pack had to suit a home that might host six people one week and twelve the next, so we focused on mixed jar sizes and repeat-friendly flavours that could be used across different dishes without feeling repetitive.
- Courier-ready glass jars packed for national delivery
- Platter-friendly formats for shared tables and casual entertaining
- Mixed flavour selection for savoury breakfasts and snack boards
- Flexible pack sizes for small family visits or larger holiday groups
What we supplied and how it was packed
We supplied a combination of sun-dried tomato preserves and pickle preserves from local farm produce around the Western Cape. The mix included flavours that work well in home catering: something rich for savoury spreads, something tangy for contrast, and a few jars that can be used in sauces, sandwiches and quick canapés. The order was put together in a way that made it easy to unpack, store and serve with minimal fuss.
The final pack included standard jars for general use and a few smaller jars for guest tables and event-style serving. Each case was arranged for courier fulfilment from Paarl, with protective packing to reduce breakage and keep labels clean on arrival. We also grouped products by intended use so the home could quickly see what to put out for breakfast, what to keep for grazing boards, and what to reserve for cooking.
- Sun-dried tomato preserves for crackers, eggs, toast and savoury tart filling
- Pickle preserves for braais, cold meats, sandwiches and cheese boards
- Mixed gift-style cartons for guest welcomes and seasonal hosting
- Clear pack labelling for easy sorting once the delivery arrived
Timeline from order to delivery
The project ran over three weeks from first enquiry to delivery. Week one covered the brief, pack sizing and flavour selection. In week two we confirmed quantities, checked courier timing and prepared the case mix for a destination that is busy in holiday periods and not always easy to receive at short notice. Week three was packing, dispatch and follow-up once the parcel reached Hermanus.
The owner wanted the order in good time before a changeover weekend, when the house would be handed from one group to another. We made sure the stock arrived early enough to be unpacked, shelved and ready for the next round of guests. The process was straightforward but required careful timing because holiday home deliveries need a buffer for traffic, weather and gate access.
How the preserves were used in the house
Once in the home, the preserves gave the kitchen quick ways to turn basic ingredients into something more complete. A spoonful could finish a cheese board, lift a sandwich filling, or sit beside boiled eggs and fresh bread for breakfast. The sun-dried tomato preserves also worked well stirred through pasta, folded into cream cheese or spread under grilled vegetables. The pickle preserves handled the sharper side of the menu, especially with cold meats, roast chicken leftovers and braai plates.
For the host, the real value was speed. Holiday meals often need to work around late arrivals, beach time and changing appetites, so having a few ready-to-serve jars meant less chopping and less waste. Guests could build their own plates and the house still felt organised. It sounds small, but for a busy coastal holiday home that makes a big difference.
- Breakfast use with eggs, toast and hot trays
- Lunch use on breads, rolls and salad plates
- Evening use on cheese boards, braai platters and snack spreads
- Leftover-friendly use in pasta, wraps and quick pantry meals
What worked well and what we would repeat
The strongest result was fit-for-purpose stock. The household did not need restaurant volumes, only the right mix of jars and pack sizes for a real holiday rhythm. The preserves held up well in courier transit, the selection matched the way the kitchen was actually used, and the owner said the packs made entertaining easier without turning the house into a catering operation.
If we were doing the same project again, we would keep the same approach: a simple flavour mix, a few size options and delivery timed around guest turnover. For a home in Hermanus, that matters because the catering needs are practical first. Good holiday food is less about fancy menus and more about having useful things on hand when people are hungry, tired or arriving late from the beach.
